Ice Skating

It's been an awesome few days. On Friday checked out World Press Photo Exhibition with Sarah and that was an amazing experience. Some of the photos just left you shaken while others made you wonder how the photojournalist was able to even get that shot in the first place. It is still on till 5th September and if you are in Auckland I'd highly recommend it. Details and stuff are on their website.

Later in the evening I went and checked out 'Scott Pilgrim V/s the World' and that was a fun movie. It isn't doing well at the box office but I'm sure it'll hit cult status when it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray. After the movie I dropped in to Benji and Shuzhen's store on K'road and Benji and me popped out for a drink and some snacks at a yakitori bar further up from their shop on K'road itself.

Saturday was supposed to be relatively busy but besides an hour at the gym and some grocery shopping I spent most of the day sleeping. In the evening was friend's club dinner night plus Sarah suggested that all of us go ice skating and it was always gonna be a last minute decision especially since most of us had never ice-skated ever before. Ruqiong cooked up a treat and it was amazing food. After procrastinating for a bit we all, including ruqiong's flatties, finally decided to head out ice-skating. Since we had even numbers of girls and guys we scammed our way in as couples so we could get cheaper rates.

Ice skating was fun - even though body is not used to it at all but managed to pick up a few tips and lessons and had a fun night out thanks to Chloe and Sarah - who knew ice-skating. I did land on my bum a few times but hopefully will be better at it next time around.

And today, spent a good chunk of the day catching up with David and Christina. The catch up was long overdue and it was nice just chilling out and talking. David lent me [more like I borrowed it :-)]  a series of graphic novel called Alias and just waiting to dig into it.

Domestic

I am looking around my room right now and it looks like an absolute pigsty but I'll get around to cleaning it up sometime soon. In the meantime I am glad that I took time out this weekend to devote to myself - so to speak. Oh and we've got new flat mates from 1st September which is awesome.

That's me for now.

Moments Filming

Had an amazing weekend filming stuff for 'Moments'. A big thanks to everyone who made it happen - all the actors, Steve - who did the camera work, Mamea family - especially Christina who helped us out with one of the location, Mary Grogan - who let us use her office, Roseanne Liang - for lending us her camera, Marsha -for doing the makeup for Sarah and Carla, Chris and Tina Wordsworth for letting us use their location and Rod Johns for filming some behind the scenes stuff.  What a weekend!!! The weather held up and didn't cause too much inconvenience - it did cause a bit of a headache when I was filming a scene on Saturday morning and for a very small amount of time on Sunday but overall it was great.

The lead up to it was pretty hectic as well and I am glad that things fell into place. We had to cancel one of the workshops on Thursday evening and Friday evening went into driving around and making sure that all props and equipment and stuff was accounted for. Saturday and Sunday was one blur with filming and since I was acting in all most of the other scenes it turned out to be exhausting weekend. Super happy that got everything we wanted and now about to digitize the footage.

Final shot of the day

At work - last week disappeared into testing the new systems and forgot how exhausting it can be. Testing most of this week as well, so still on 9-5.30 shifts - which I am not sure I am particularly fond off as you can't do anything else during the day.

One of the testing stations at work

I was supposed to finish off the soccer edit last Wednesday evening with final changes coming through but the client forgot to send the instructions through after specifically stating that he was going to do it. Wasted a couple of hours of my time driving around and waiting and I am just considering billing them for it.

Trapped

Nick - one of the people I met at a friends get together has a juice bar called 'The Juicery' and I tried out his soup of the day a couple of times and it was amazing. Highly recommended you check out the joint if you are in the city.

Oh I think I might have forgotten to put up stuff about the friends get together a couple of weeks back. Here are a couple of pics from it.

It was Indian themed and I cooked a mixed vegetable dish for all of us - which turned out alright and was enjoyed by all. :)

Things are coming together for this coming weekend's shoot. Now just a matter of figuring out logistics and schedules. Looks like it'll be a challenging but fun shoot.

Edit Update

NZ Football Federation brass watched the edit that I did on the freelance job and came back to the client I'm doing the job for - requesting some changes. They loved the story and the emotion but needed some technical stuff back in, so we set about implementing those changes.

It took about 4.5 hours all up and involved a major re-edit but it's all done. Now waiting for feedback and any more changes once they watch the re-edit.

In more edit news - I've been asked if I would like to edit a 1 hour doco thats already been comissioned. I am keen as chips but don't know how it'll work with my job and if i'll even get time off work. At this point waiting to see what the exact details are and then will see which way the dice roll.

Till later,
Amit

Fitness - what fitness?

Well - it's been a hard yacker getting back into fitness after the trip. First there was the back injury and then it was the flu and now I've finally gotten back into it over the past month or so. It's almost like starting from scratch again. I now have a personal training session once every fortnight to make sure my fitness regime is on track and it's helping heaps.

Over the past month or so I've dropped from 64.7 KG to 64.1 KG with body fat going down from 19% to 16%. So the fitness game is back on.

Standup comedy sketch

So I was checking my mails in the morning as everyone of us does and I see this mail from Marc Ellis with no subject. I almost dismissed it as spam and was about to hit delete when it stuck me that maybe it's better to open it and read it, so I did. The first line was the intro and I read Toby's name (who happened to be old pals with Marc), so I knew it was genuine and it turned out that Toby had referred my name to Marc as someone who could pull off a 2-5 minute standup piece for the launch of Marc's new book 'Good Fullas: A guide to Kiwi blokes'.

Marc sent an image of what he refers to as a 'Pandabear' and I pissed myself laughing and agreed to catch up for a coffee and at the meeting read the detailed description and was besides myself. It is a pisstake on stereotypes and a good way to laugh at ourselves, so I agreed to it. This was a couple of weeks back and the big one was last night.

This was my first standup comedy sketch and I know too well the feeling of dying a complete death on stage when nothing you do goes right and was slightly nervous from unrelated stints on stage. I wrote up a 3 paragraph sketch and then went about learning the order of the things to talk about. The thing that made me nervous was that with standup you never know how the audience is going to react to your stuff and it's also about the timing.

The launch was at Toto restaurant and the location was beautiful and had a lot of character. I was one of the early ones as usual and ended up taking some pics with the camera phone (with a different paid app though) and got some cool shots before people started arriving.

It was hard to just mingle with people coming in as I didn't really know anyone and it'd have been hard to just stay in character the whole time when you don't know how long before you are going to be up on the stage. Luckily, Greg - one of the actors I've known from Meisner classes was there as well - playing a 'Bogan' and we chatted for a long time and then had our sketches drawn by the sketch artist Donovan - who did the sketches for the book.

Donovan sketching Greg

It was hard to get a feel for the crowd as it was pretty fragmented. Toby and Kelly were there at the launch as well. And after an intro by Marc - we were off. First up was Greg and he did an amazing standup piece and it went higher and higher till he said the word 'cunt' towards the end of the piece and he lost a good chunk of the audience because of the offensive nature of the word. But it was still a very tough act to follow and I was next up.
Marc with Greg

It is always slightly disorienting when you seperate yourself from the crowd and getup on a stage to speak because suddenly you are the centre of attention. Well - I used my nervous energy to fuel the sketch and once I got going it was a blur with some distinct moments I can remember as I decided to interact with the audience and keep them involved. The order I had prepared went out of the window and I jumped from one topic to the other based on the audience reaction. And I still managed to keep the audience with me till the end and got huge amount of laughs throughout.

After the sketch I got to talk to almost everyone in the room and apparently the thing did go down very well based on the number of pats on the back and broad smiles whenever they saw me. The other 2 acts straight after me were funny as well and overall it turned out to be a very enjoyable night.

Me as 'Panda bear' with the kingfishers

Take a guess as to which one I am

Got to talk to a lot of interesting people during the mingling session and I came back home bouncing off the walls with such a positive reception to my first comedy schtick. Apparently I had good comic timing - who knew!! :-) You learn something new about yourself some days.

It was a big confidence booster after missing out on 2 TV commercials this year after being on the final shortlist.

Phew!!!

Just came back from doing a small stand-up comedy sketch at Marc Ellis' new book launch and am bouncing off the walls right now. It went down a treat with the crowd and the event itself was cool.

Circle of Friends

The freelance edit job is complete to the client's satisfaction - a couple of changes are required but the client hasn't called back, so I am presuming that they are showing it the company they got the contract from to check for any more changes before calling me in.

I caught up with Claire, Sarah, Julia, Sarah L - over the past week. Also got to make new friends - Charlie and Chloe and went out to watch an open mic acoustic gig with Chris - which turned out to be a long week night but listened to some amazing music. And finally checked out a doco screening of 'Earthrace' that Lance worked on and Ryan shot and directed & met more old friends over at the screening. More catching up to do over the coming weeks with old friends and new friends alike.

To top off the busy week that has been was an audition I went to recently. I was on the final shortlist for the TV commercial but didn't get it in the end. It was a fun audition audition though. I don't particularly like my camera phone but it's handy. I'll start using the LX3 again though.

That's me for now.
